Moving to Clovis, NM

By Gayle Sharpe • October 24th, 2007

You’ve finally finished your real estate closing and it’s time to move into your new home in Clovis, NM. With all the excitement, have you remembered everything?

A move is so much easier if you plan ahead. Some things should be done ahead of time and others can wait until the last minute. This is where a list becomes your best friend. Create lists for things to do and when to do them.

The first step is to make a list of what you want to take with you, including such things as furniture, appliances, and personal items. Pass on the things you don’t want, either to friends, charity or have a huge garage sale. If you are moving to another town you may want to subscribe to the newspaper so you can learn about your new town. If you plan to use a professional mover, now is the time to contact one for an estimate. And don’t forget to get copies of school, medical, and legal records.

As the time gets closer to your actual move, start using up those foods in the freezer and clear out those old cleaning supplies. Don’t forget to send out change-of-address cards. Contact all of your utility companies and give them the date to discontinue the services and where to send the last bill. Then call your new utility companies and arrange for them to start at your new home.

In the last couple of weeks before you move into your Clovis, NM home you may need to close your bank account and open a new one in your new neighborhood. If you have a safe deposit box, you will need to transfer these items. This is the time to get your car serviced and make a list of emergency phone numbers and address. And now let’s get serious about that packing.

After you arrive in Clovis, NM and moved into your new home and all the chaos and dust has settled you think you may have forgotten something. So you go back and check your lists. You will need to update your driver’s license and registration. Even if you are only moving across town you must let the Department of Motor Vehicles know of your new address. Are you registered to vote? You will need to notify them, you may have changed voting districts. And call your auto insurance and make them aware of your change of address.

As you are in a new town you will need to find new doctors and dentists and have your records transferred. Take this chance to get to know your neighbors. They will be the best source of information about plumbers and auto mechanics. Your neighbors will already know who has the best burger or freshest seafood. And who knows, you may even find the perfect babysitter lives right next door.

After you have settled in and life is almost back to normal, make sure you gather all the documents and receipts pertaining to your transaction and the move. You will need them when you file your taxes next year. Congratulations on your new home and welcome to Clovis, New Mexico. We think you’ll like it here.
